Lycidas by John Milton
"Lycidas" is a poem by John Milton, written in 1637, as a Pastoral Elegy. It is dedicated to the memory of Edward king, a friend of Milton's at Cambridge. Who downed when his ship sank in August 1637. The poem consist of 193 lines in length, and it is irregularly rhymed. It was republished in 1645. The Pastoral Elegy is a poem about both death and idyllic rural life. The genre is actually a subgroup of pastoral poetry as the elegy takes the pastoral elements and relates them to expressing grief at a loss. The poet also comments against the degeneration and corruption of the Anglican church while suggesting that Lycidas was an honest selfless clergyman.
