c) 52
d) 59
Correct answer: a) 54
Dr Johnson
Johnson's last great work, critical, and biographical, prefaces, the works of the English Poets. It is also known as "The Lives of the Poets". He chooses 52 writers who mostly belong to the 17th to 18th centuries. He divided the life of the poets into three parts. The lives are ordered chronologically by date of death, not birth and range in length from a few pages to an entire volume. The significant lives are those of Abraham Cowley, John Milton, John Dryden, Joseph Addison and Alexander Pope. The minor lives such as William Collins and William Shenstone are striking. Dryden and pope's works are readable and give a social message.
