Samson Agonistes, a Tragic Drama
Samson Agonistes is Milton's tragic closet drama. It is published with Paradise Regained in 1671. It is written in blank verse. The Lord of the Philistines bibbed her to discover the source of Samson's great strength. "Delilah" was a woman of sorek. She is the only woman in Samson's story who is named 'Delilah'. The Bible says that Samson loved her but not that she loved him. The two were not said to be married and the idea that they had a sexual relationship is in the words of Josey Bridges Snyder. Milton refined the character of Biblical Samson for his play. Biblical Samson is an egocentric insensitive bully, he is neither morally correct nor intelligent. However, Milton turned him into a thoughtful person and compared him to a Seventeenth Century Puritan.
