Explanation of English Literature MCQs Test

Marriages of John Milton

John Milton was born in London on 9 December 1608, into a middle-class family. He was an English Poet, polemicist, scholarly man of letters and civil servant for the commonwealth of English under Oliver Cromwell. His life, as well as some of his ideas, were influenced by his three marriages. In 1642 he married Mary Powell, who was seventeen at the time. She left him after a few weeks because of their emotional incompatibility but reconciled with him in 1645. They had three daughters and a son together before her death in 1652. His experience with Mary shaped his opinions on divorce, which led to his famous pamphlet concerning the subject. Four years after Mary’s death, he married Katherine Woodcock. She died two years later after giving birth to a daughter who lived only a few months. In her memory, he composed his sonnet, "On His Deceased Wife". His third marriage with the much younger Elizabeth Munshill was apparently happy.
