A collection of short poems by various poets known as Tottel’s Miscellany contains 310 poems, including the 39 poems added to the second edition. This collection was published by Richard Tottel, an English publisher whose shop was with Temple Bar in London. First Publication of Tottel’s Miscellany


The first collection of Tottel’s Miscellany was published on 5 June 1557. This collection contained 271 poems and was named Songes and Sonettes Written By the Ryght Honorable Lord Henry Howard, late Earle of Surrey, Thomas Wyatt the Elder and other poets as well. It was the first time that the anthologies became popular by the end of the sixteenth century, moreover, it was sung the great contribution of Tottel to the English letters. It was the first publication to be printed for the pleasure of common readers.

Predominant Songs and Sonnets

In this collection the poems of Earl of Surrey and Thomas Wyatt are predominant. Both predominant poets were highly influenced by Italian poetry.
