A sentence which does not contain a verb and subject, will not make complete sense and have proper meaning. A complete thought is expressed in the sentence. Moreover, we can express our opinions.

What are the 4 Types of Sentences?

In the following paragraphs, you can read the definitions of 4 types of sentence and their examples.

There are four types of sentences:

  1. Simple Sentence 

  2. Compound Sentence 

  3. Complex Sentence

  4. Compound-Complex Sentence

1 - Simple Sentence

A simple sentence is a type of sentence which gives the proper meaning and proper sense. We can use only one independent clause and there is no other dependent clause in the sentence.


For example

  • I go to Karachi.

  • You speak a lie.

  • They drink water.

  • She reads a lesson.

  • Ali writes a letter.

  • I am happy.

  • He speaks the truth.


2 - Compound Sentence

A compound sentence is a type of sentence which contains two or more independent clauses. In addition, it contains conjunctions to connect the sentence in the compound sentence.


For example

  • I am playing cricket because I like cricket games.

  • He is reading a book but he is not fine.

  • You should go now because your father is waiting for you.

  • I was going to Lahore but I was late.

  • They are happy because they are going to picnic.

  • My brother is happy because he got the first position in his school.

  • Tomorrow is Sunday, therefore, we will go to the village.

  • I am watching television because I am free.

  • You do not sit with me because you are selfish.


3 - Complex Sentence

A complex sentence is a type of sentence which contains one independent clause and one dependent clause. Relative pronouns are the part of the sentence to join two clauses.


For example

  • In the name of Allah who is Rehman and Raheem.

  • This is what I have done.

  • I shall come when you make a phone call me.

  • I chose a pink colour which you like a must.

  • Saba is wearing a frock which looks beautiful.

  • Whenever I feel sad then I listen to songs.


4 - Compound-Complex Sentence

A compound-complex sentence is a type of sentence which contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.


For example

  • He is a bad boy and his behaviour is also bad because he spends all his time with bad boys.

  • I am happy and my parents are also happy because my brother got a job.

  • He is a doctor and his father is also a doctor because they are educated.
