Gorboduc by Thomas Sackville and Thomas Norton
Introduction
Among the first English regular tragedy plays is Thomas Sackville's and Thomas Norton's Gorbodduc, a sixteenth-century drama. This blank verse tragic drama deals with the Gorboduc, a mythical king of ancient Britain. It was first performed in 1561 at the Christmas celebration given by the Inner Temple. Additionally, it is called Ferrex and Porrex.
Gorboduc is one of the first English tragedies to borrow from the Senecan tragedy. Making use of classic formalities, including chorus and message (but ignoring the unity of time and place), it provides a blend of English and Classical elements. It ignores the unities of time and place and adds non-Classical dumb shows before each act, but it employs Classic formalities such as chorus and messenger. Gorboduc premiered before Queen Elizabeth I on Jan. 18, 1561. It was published in 1565 with printing errors and in better form in 1570 as The Tragedy of Ferrex and Porrex.
