PHRASE and TYPES OF PHRASES

Phrase

A phrase is a group of words that do not use subject and verb, does not make a complete sentence and does not give a complete meaning and complete sense. Phrases do not stand alone. We can use a single part of speech. Simply we can say a phrase is a group of words.

For example 

I saw a marker on the table. 

He saw a beautiful girl in the market

They built a good shop.

I buy a doll from the market.

The book is on the table.

We play cricket on the ground.


Types of Phrases

There are six types of phrases.

  • Noun phrase 
  • Verb phrase 
  • Adverb phrase 
  • Adjective phrase 
  • Prepositional phrase 
  • Gerund phrase

 

1 - Noun Phrase

A noun phrase acts as a noun in a sentence. It is a modifier of a noun and we can say that noun combined with another word that is modifying the noun. It functions like a noun in a sentence. Noun phrase gives complete meaning and complete sense. 


For example

A child on the bed.

A beautiful pink flower. 

She saw a beautiful baby.

The teacher saw an intelligent girl.

A glass is full of ice.

I buy a blue pen.


2 - Verb Phrase

A Verb phrase is a type of phrase that can use along with the main verb or verb and helping verb used together in a sentence.


For example

He has broken glass. 

They are playing cricket.

We are going to Lahore.

I have completed an assignment. 

She is singing a song.

You are writing a letter.

We should study hard for the midterm.

She has deceived me.

A child has slept.


3 - Adjective phrase

The adjective phrase contains more than one word and works together as well as gives more information about nouns and pronouns. An adjective phrase modifies a noun or a pronoun. We can use a single adjective in the sentence.


For example

She is a woman of friendly nature.

You lead a much more interesting life.

The boy in the car is my brother.

A woman in a market is my teacher.

A child on the ground is my neighbour.

I am very happy with her friend.


4 - Adverb Phase

An adverb phrase is a type of phrase that we can say add more information about the verb, adjective and adverb itself.

 

For example

He runs very fast.

My school is behind your home.

They drive a bike at very high speed.

She is speaking very slow.

Your hair is very long.

She is singing very sweetly.

He is drinking water quickly.


5 - Prepositional Phrase

The prepositional phrase means more words work together to get more information about prepositions. Condition, location or possessive and time to give more informs. Ends of the preposition with a noun and pronoun.


For example

They are walking on the road.

We were sitting on chairs.

Children are playing on the floor.

She is dancing on the stage.

Ali is sleeping on the bed.

He is eating with his friend.

She is singing at the party.

I am eating rice with a spoon.

We are writing an essay in black pen.


6 - Gerund Phrase

A gerund phrase is a type of phrase started with the gerund we can use the ending of words as ING. Gerund phrase works on the noun. We can say a gerund phrase replacing a noun.


For example

He loves swimming in the lake.

My favourite activity is writing.

Zubaida’s favourite hobby is singing.

Ali’s favourite activity is playing.
