Explanation of English Literature MCQs Test
English Civil War
The English Civil War broke out earliest in June 1642. The Long Parliament was led primarily by Puritans, who viewed the theatre as the centre of vice. On 2nd September, an ordinance was passed that ordered theatres to close for the duration of the war. They remained closed throughout the Commonwealth period in England, only re-opening with the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. The Restoration of Charles II to the throne of England in 1660 brought about a revolution in English literature and with him, theatre regained its place in English life. During his years in France, Charles II came to admire French entertainments and theatrical styles.
