Gray's Elegy written in a country Churchyard

Elegy written in a Country Churchyard is a poem by Thomas Gray, completed in 1750 and first published in 1751. Thomas Gray was an English poet, letter writer, classical scholar and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was born on 26 December 1716 in London and died on 30 July 1771, in Cambridgeshire, England. He was a self-critical writer, who published only 13 poems in his Lifetime. He was a dominant poetic figure in the eighteenth century. In this poem, Gray reflects on the lives of the humble and unheralded people buried in the country Churchyard in which he is standing. An Elegy normally mourns the loss of an important and famous person, but this poem is more concerned with the short and simple annals of the poor.
