Gronger Hill Poem By John Dyer
John Dyer was a Welsh Poet and painter. He was born on 13th August 1699, in Aberglasney, Carmarthenshire, in England. He was sent to Westminster school and he was destined for the law. He wandered about south Wales, sketching and painting portraits. In 1726, his first poem, "Gronger Hill", appeared in a miscellany published by poet Richard Savage. It was a short poem, consisting of only 150 lines. It was an irregular ode in Pindaric style, but Dyer entirely rewrote it into a loose measure of four cadences and printed it separately in 1727. It had immediate and brilliant success. Dyer worked outside of the trend of politically oriented work and focused his concerns work the countryside landscape of his time. It belonged to the eighteenth century. He died on the 15th December 1758 at Coningsby in England.
