Explanation of English Literature MCQs Test

A Printing Press by William Caxton

A printing press was first introduced by William Caxton in Westminster, London in 1476. Before this books were copied out by hand. These copies of books are known as 'manuscripts'. The word 'manuscriptis taken from the Latin language which means 'written by hand'. The printing press technology changes the pace of production and circulation of information.

William Caxton's date of birth is not known for certain, an English writer, merchant and diplomat was born in 1422 in Kent. He just had basic schooling but was not especially well educated. He seems to have been spending most of his time in the Low Countries. After the death of Robert Large (merchant, whom Caxton was apprenticed), he moved to Bruges, Belgium (a wealthy cultured city). After 1450, he became the governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of London. When he had a business trip, he observed the new printing industry in Cologne. He started a printing press in Bruges in collaboration with Colard Mansion.
